Our first L.I.L. Readers session launched with joy, curiosity, and a room full of possibility. We explored our theme, “Changing Seasons,” with hands-on literacy activities that helped readers connect words to the world around them.

What we did

  • Read-alouds:

Do I Have to Wear a Coat? by Rachel Isadora and Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak opened a conversation about how weather changes and how we feel about those changes.

  • Tech exploration:

Learners got comfortable reading from the touchscreen TV, turning reading time into interactive time.

  • Techniques that made reading fun:

    • Role play — acting out scenes and vocabulary to build confidence and comprehension.

    • Sequencing with pictures — ordering images to retell stories and strengthen recall.

    • Vocabulary moments — we met three new words: chrysanthemum, juniper, and eaves (and used pictures to lock them in).

Our culture: Leaders in Literacy

We talked about what it means to be a Leader in Literacy:

  1. If someone struggles to read, we don’t laugh.

  2. We never make fun.

  3. We help with encouragement and support.

Brilliant ideas from brilliant minds

Kids and parents brainstormed literacy games for the big room:

  • “The Floor Is Lava” (word & letter edition) — leap to the correct word or letter (shout-out to 7-year-old Avia for the idea!).

  • Fun With Phonics — a throwback with a fresh twist.

  • Level-Up Reading — a game where progress unlocks the next challenge.

Thank you, village

Huge appreciation to our parent volunteer who jumped in to support learners. Community makes this work shine.
